Abstract

This research takes the novel The Red Badge of Courage as the object. This novel has been claimed as naturalistic novel. Naturalistic novel tells of human and his or her relation with nature. This novel does not recognize the existence of supernatural elements that cannot be proven by matter or something that is beyond of the human mind itself. The research problems are: 1). How is the main character portrayed in Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage? 2). How does the main character, Henry Fleming, reveal the aspect of naturalism in Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage? And 3). How does the aspect of naturalism convey its significance toward the theme of Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage? This research aims to find what aspect of naturalism that can be found in this novel that has been acclaimed as naturalistic novel. The theory that used in this research are the theory of characterization by M.J Murphy (1972), theory of theme by Tara McCarthy (1997), and the aspect of naturalism by Mideke Martin (2012). This research uses qualitative method and structural approach. The data source of this research is one of Stephen Crane’s novels entitled The Red Badge of Courage that published by Global Grey Ebook in 2018. The results of this study show that the main character in this novel is the young soldier named Henry Fleming who often the narrator calls as “the youth”. Then, the aspect of naturalism that revealed by Henry Fleming is determinism. A belief where humans are controlled by external force (environment and society) and internal force (instinct and passion). Moreover, the theme of the story also indicate that the determinism as the aspect of naturalism revealed its significance to the theme of the story, namely war as the nature’s force over human destiny. The relationship found has clarified the function of the aspect of naturalism which gathers the elements of a work literature as a unity.
