Abstract
The use of formula in the popular literature work is functioned as the component of constructing a fiction story. However, the use of formula in popular literature work is various, the existence of that formula takes the important role to decide the genre in a literature work. The existence of popular literature has been widely developed, as the literature work has been visualized into another form that is known as film. Cinema and literature are connected each other, meanwhile they are different with their own characteristics. Film is also used to respond the written literature work. The researcher believed that the formula used in that film is the hard-boiled fiction formula. However, there is difference of the formula used according of the Cawelti’s. The phenomenon becomes the focus in this research. In order to know where the part it is occurred, the research use qualitative method, and the data of this research is the dialogues and the cutscenes of the film to be applied in the formula of hard-boiled fiction worked in the Se7en (1995) movie. It is resulted that there is a development from sub formula of hard-boiled fiction, which is characterization of criminal figure as the main element of detective story to create changes significantly.
