Abstract
The topic of this study is the effect of brainstorming strategy on students’ reading ability in descriptive text – a pre-experimental study at the first grade of MTs YTI Sukamerang. The objective of this study is to investigate whether brainstorming strategy is significantly effective to improve students’ reading ability in descriptive text. The purpose of the research was (1) to know the students’ reading ability before using brainstorming strategy, (2) to know the students’ reading ability after using brainstorming strategy, and (3) to know the significant difference between students’ reading ability before and after using brainstorming strategy. This is a pre-experimental study involved first-grade students of MTs YTI Sukamerang. The samples consist of 30 students of VII-B as the experimental group. The experimental group was exposed brainstorming strategy in teaching-learning of reading comprehension. The data were obtained by using pretest and posttest. The pretest was given before the treatment and the posttest were calculated using analytical statistics. The result of the data analysis shows that the average score of students’ reading ability before using brainstorming strategy is 57.33 meaning low category, while the average score in the result of posttest by using textual patterns is 72.63 meaning high category. The result of calculating t-test is t count = 12.75 is higher than t table = 1.45. In brief, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means there is a significant difference of students’ reading ability by using brainstorming strategy. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that there was significant effect of brainstorming strategy on students’ reading ability in descriptive text. It is very important for the teacher that brainstorming strategy can be used as alternative reading material in teaching-learning strategy.
