Abstract

This research explains moods in film The Shawshank Redemption in which the basis of this research lies in relationship between lighting elements and words description in creating moods. Film The Shawshank Redemption is the first rank best films of all time based on IMDb version, further, the film keeps a great steady pace along with the writing narration and great cinematography, in particular, the composition of lighting set with the narration that brings into a whole story. Then, it becomes the data for analysis. The research problems are: 1) How do the lighting elements and words description create mood in The Shawshank Redemption (1994)? 2) How do the lighting elements in the film function to the story? The research aims to investigate moods prevail of each scene through the lighting elements and words description and to find out the function of the lighting elements to the story of The Shawshank Redemption. The theory which is used in this research is lighting elements postulated by Joseph M. Boggs and Dennis W. Petrie (2008). According to the theory, there are two terms of lighting elements that are high-key lighting creating positive moods and low-key lighting creating negative moods. The result of the research indicates that high-key lighting in creating positive moods divided into two subcategories 1) high-key lighting supported by dialogues create moods such as happiness, hopeful, freedom, and others. Next, 2) high-key lighting supported without dialogues create moods of empowered, joyous, and rejuvenated. Moreover, low-key lighting in creating negative moods also divided into two subcategories there are 1) low-key lighting supported by dialogues create moods of mysterious, somber, tense, etc. and 2) low-key lighting supported without dialogues create moods of hopeless, gloomy, and tense. In particular, there are several scenes using low-key lighting in creating positive moods such as warm and triumph. Furthermore, the function of lighting elements to the story are as climax, symbol, paradox, theme and foreshadowing in which function to develop the plot. Moreover, from the analysis concludes that film The Shawshank Redemption in creating moods through lighting elements constructed formulaic and non-formulaic in which concerning the capability of paraphrasing the moods functions to narrative elements and cinematic elements.
