Abstract
The connotative meaning is the communicative value and expression that has the virtue of what it refers to. When talking about meaning, it is very important to know connotative meaning intended by speaker and writer. Therefore the researcher need to conduct the research related to that topic focusing on research questions: 1. To find out kinds of connotative meaning, 2. To show the functions of connotative meaning. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. Meanwhile, the main theories for conducting data analysis are from Geoffrey Leech (1981) and J.N Hook (1976). Based on data analysis, it shows that there are 44 data of connotative meaning kinds: positive connotations (19 data), negative connotations (15 data) and neutral connotations (10 data). Besides, there are 28 data of functions connotative meaning: to show the beauty of a speech (5 data), to refine a statement (10 data), to show the value of dislike towards others (3 data), to show anger to others (3 data), to hide from others because of emotional reactions (2 data), and to emphasize meaning (5 data). From the data analysis, the results of his research can be concluded that in the social articles of the Jakarta Globe, it mainly conves good connotation values to the community environment as the positive connotative meaning. Furthermore, the author upholds the politeness of language by choosing to use the language by refining it.
