Abstract
Speaking is one of the difficulties that EFL Students face when they learn English. It is because English is not their mother tongue, which becomes one challenging thing to do, and it makes them lack of engagement in the learning process. One strategy that is expected to increase their engagement in learning speaking is giving a reward. This study is aimed to reveal how the process of students’ behavioral engagement in learning speaking activities by using the reward. Furthermore it is aimed to reveal the students’ responses toward reward during learning speaking process. This research used a case study qualitative approach by elaborating the process of students’ behavioral engagement in learning speaking activities by using the reward. It was conducted in the first semester of the academic year 2019-2020. The participants of this research were six students of fourth-grade Piri Reis of SD Islam Al-Amanah Cileunyi-Bandung. The data analysis was presented by describing the result of the class observation of students’ behavioral engagement during learning speaking through reward and students’ responses toward reward itself. The result of this research shows that the process of Students’ Behavioral Engagement in Learning Speaking through Giving Reward was successfully implemented, it demonstrated from the observation sheets of both students and teacher. The findings show that the students were more engaged in learning the speaking process by using reward. Furthermore, the study explores the students’ response toward the reward during learning speaking on students’ behavioral engagement. The findings show that the students gave positive responses toward the reward in the learning process. Giving a reward in learning process made them more enthusiastic to learn speaking. Therefore, giving a reward in the learning process is recommended to be used to improve students’ engagement in learning speaking process.
