Abstract

Speaking is the ability to express ideas, intentions, thoughts, and feelings to others. Speaking English requires thinking and involving affective factors; particulary self– esteem. Self – esteem is one factor that triggers the students’ ability in speaking English. This research focuses on investigating the correlation of self- esteem and EFL speaking ability of the twelve- grade students at SMK 21 Al- Misbah. The method used in this research was a quantitative method of correlation. The population of the research was the third-grade students of SMK 21 Al- Misbah in the academic year 2019/2020. From the population, the class of XII-TKJ 1 was chosen as the sample by using random sampling. The used in the research adopt the questionnaire of The Rosenberg’s scale (1995), The Coopersmith’s scale Ajizah (2013) and Harmer (1998) for the speaking test the researcher adopt from Brown (2004). The scores from both of the instruments were calculated and analyzed by using the statistical procedure of Pearson r correlation formula to find out if there was a significant relationship between the two variables. The result of this research showed that there was a moderate high correlation with the index value of the correlation coefficient 0.651. In addition, the hypotheses testing showed that t0 > tTable , in which 4.618 > 2.756. In conclusion, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and there is a significant correlation between self- esteem and EFL speaking ability. Therefore, it is suggested that the teacher know students’ self- esteem which can be used to enhance student’s self –esteem as one of the primary goals of language education. So, it will improve their speaking ability.
