Abstract

Collocation words interpreted as a procedure in stringing a phrase in the preparation of the right and correct combination of words. In the lyrics of the song Superman is Dead, there are many collocation words with different meanings that contain vocabulary. In this research, the researcher focuses on the type of collocation based on the division of groups and look for social meanings and criticisms that fall into the type of collocation. The problem in this research is formulated into two questions, they are 1. What types of collocation words are found in the lyric song of the album “Superman is dead”? 2. What social and critic contents having the words of collocation are shown in the lyric song album of "Superman is Dead”?. This research uses qualitative methods in data processing by identifying, categorizing, analyzing and interpreting to answer the questions. The data used in this study were drawn from song lyrics from an Indonesian band from Bali. The researcher used the theory of Benson’s et al (1986) and Wilson (1921) to support the problem. The results show that in three albums of Superman is dead they are Kuta Rock City, Black Market Love, and Angel and The Outsiders. The researcher found 140 collocation words based on each type of collocation. Based on the classifications there are grammatical collocation and lexical collocation. There are 72 collocation words for grammatical which are divided into 8 types, and 68 collocation words for lexical which are divided into six types. Besides, the researchers analyzed the social meanings and critic contents using the collocation of the words, and the results showed that in the three albums there are 44 words of social meanings and critical contents that used collocation words. Then there are also 16 types of verbal patterns in English that are included in grammatical type, and 1 for lexical which the researcher didn’t find in the three albums.
