Abstract

In the ESP (English for Specific Purposes) teaching, the most common problem is that English materials do not meet the students’ needs. This research aims to reveal the relevance of English reading materials with the students’ needs analysis. Specifically, the purposes of this research are: 1) to identify the students’ needs in learning English, 2) to investigate the relevance of English reading materials with the students’ needs, 3) to seek the English materials that may fulfill the Mathematics students’ needs. The research is a case study that collected the data from questionnaire, document analysis, and interview. The questionnaire was used to analyse the students’ needs in English subject. Furthermore, document analysis was obtained to seek the relevance between students’ needs and English materials. Moreover, the interview was done to reveal the English reading materials that may fulfill the students’ needs. The participants of this research were twenty-five students’ at the Seventh semester of Mathematics Education at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The result of data analysis concludes three remarks. Firstly, the students express their main needs that is necessary to them is speaking skill (92%). It is relevant with the students’ target analysis is for their further education. Similarly, students’ want is understanding meaning of words and sentences or lexical understanding in reading materials (56%), especially the terms of Mathematics. However, students’ lack is listening skill (60%). Secondly, the materials used in this research were taken by the lecturer from the journal about Mathematics. Based on the analysis of the content of the journal that used by the students, this research found that the journal provides particular contents and topics about Mathematics. This indicates that the journals are in line with the course program that is courses for Mathematics Education. The lecturer took the journal using English language with many vocabularies and terms about Mathematical issues. Consequently, the students are easy to learn and comprehend what the sentences mean. Thirdly, the relevance is that English reading materials meet their needs, whereas the relevancy and appropriateness of the English reading materials are suitable. What students wanted and needed in their questionnaire has been implemented by the lecturer in the class through the materials and method of teaching. To sum up, this research shows that the result of the relevance between the English reading materials with students’ needs is meet. This study is recommended for those who want to make an analysis about students’ needs and attempt to search appropriate materials for the students.
