Abstract

The spreading of slang words are very fast, and one of the factors is from conversation. This study concerns on the analysis of slang words used in The Late Late Show. This research focused on finding the types of slang word formation and the process of slang words formation used in The Late Late Show which the data are obtained from conversations of presenter and guest stars in talk shows itself. The theory applied in this research to get the types of slang word formation process is word formation from Yule (2010). Then, the descriptive qualitative content analysis is used in this research. The result shows that there are five types of word formation from 52 data, there are acronym (2 data), blending (4 data), coinage (4 data), clipping (5 data) and compounding (37 data). Meanwhile, for the process of slang words formation the participant construct the slang word by many ways, Those process are: for acronyms is combining each initial of free morpheme, blending is combining two or three separated morpheme, coinage is inventing trade names for commercial products that become a free morpheme, for clipping is reduced or shorten several last letter of the morpheme into a new free morpheme and for compound is merging two free morpheme. However, not all the types of word formations are explained in the corpus data. From eleven types of word formations in the theoretical description, there are five types that are not found in the research. Those are, back formation, borrowing, conversion, derivation, etymology and multiple process.
