Abstract

The research mainly explores derivational nominal suffixes in novel Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. This research has two main problems. (1) What types of derivational suffixes are found in Harry Potter The Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K Rowling; (2) How the process of derivational nominal suffixes in Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone novel change the meaning. To answer the two main problems above, the researcher used morphology by Ingo Plag’s theories which discuss about the types of nominal suffixes and derivational nominal suffixes. The theories are used in supporting for analyzing data in chapter four. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive method. The source of data in this research is Novel Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. In analyzing data, the researcher uses several steps; reading and studying theory of derivational and theory of suffix, collecting the data from sentence which the word contains types of suffix, including nominal suffix. And the last is finding and learning the process changing the meaning of each word contains nominal suffixes in the sentence on the novel Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. The data analyses showed findings and discussion based formulated research problems. There are seven types of nominal suffixes in novel Harry Potter and The sorcerer’s Stone, such as nominal suffix –age, -er, -dom, -ion, -ness, -ment, and –ing. On other hand, process derivational of nominal suffixes happens because there is addition suffix on the base of word. Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher can make conclusion that there are three words that contain the nominal suffixes -age. There are two words that contain the suffix -dom. Suffix -er there are nine words. There are nine words contains nominal suffixes –ness. There are nine word that contain suffix -ion. There are eight words that contain nominal suffixes –ment. And suffix –ing there are twenty six words that indicate a nominal suffix.
