Abstract

The wide variety of entertainment never missed from the influence of the culture and society. These impact of the culture also spreads to the literary work, especially to the Novel. The literary work written by Leila Aboulela called Minaret try to represent the ability and power of woman against the thought of traditional gender roles which consider that woman always inferior to men. This research aims (1) To know how the representation of gender equality is described in Aboulela’s minaret (2) To identify how Aboulela present the women’s effort to gain gender equality in Minaret. This research is a literary criticism using feminism method by Lois Tyson. The primary data of this research were expressions in words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraph related to gender equality and feminism in the novel. The result of this research shows two important points. First, there are eight aspects which cause gender inequality based on Millet. Through the eighth aspects, the researcher wants to show the representation of gender equality in Aboulela’s Minaret. The aspect of education was more representative to cause the inequality of gender in aboulela’s minaret meanwhile the other aspects seemed to strengthen the aspect of education. There are also three forms of woman efforts to obtain the equality between sexes. The most influence efforts are the effort of status, which showed that women also be able to have high status in the public sphere. The significant meaning of women efforts to obtain the equality is that women cannot regard as subordinate to men.
