Abstract
There are some ways to express ideas, especially in a literary work. A novel talks about human activities and describes what happened in surrounding. Character means the actor of the story and also as the characterization of the story. The characters describe the interest, desire, emotion, and moral principles that owned that figures. Characterization is the process conveying information about characters in fiction or conversation of the main characters in the novel Moby Dick written by Herman Melville. The researcher reason is interested in it because while reading the synopsis tells almost all oceans and bond between men and little discussion of everyday life with family. The researcher uses the qualitative method in this research, especially descriptive method. It provided descriptive data, in the form of words and sentences. Through qualitative methods, research objectives can be achieved by looking at social reality through literary works consumers (readers) and connect it to the meaning of literary works or interpreted and conclusions drawn by the researcher. The descriptive method is the way of describing evidences then followed by analysis. This research uses the characterization theory by Abrams. Finally it is concluded that the result of the analysis shows that: 1) Herman Melville characterizes the main characters of Moby Dick are by physical appearances, age, gender, number of characters, and the activities of main character. For example is appearance of Ishmael such as a whit-skinned, a young man, and smart as can be said to have a broad idea. 2) Social relationship is present in the Moby Dick novel more toward bonds between men. And social relationships are related to how the expression of aspects of human existence.
