Abstract

There are a lot of features of language. One of them that become the concerning of this study is modality. Modality is a reaction or attitude of the speaker toward a proposition. There are the meanings and the rules to arrange modality in a lot of communication activities. The audiences or listeners should know the meaning of that modality. They who do not understand them will misunderstand what the speaker talks about. If it occurs, the message cannot be delivered to the audiences or listeners themselves. This thesis aims to describe the types and meanings of modality and the speech acts in which modalities are used by president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his speech in a world culture forum. The research uses the theory of modality from Palmer, Perkins, Chaer, Cruse and Salkie and the theory of speech act taken from Searle, Leech, Yule, and Cutting. The data taken as objects are utterances containing modal verbs. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method to make a systematic and accurate description, as well as to describe the object clearly. The discussion of this research shows that there are epistemic, deontic and dynamic modality in the speech. Based on the findings of types and functions of modality, there are representative, declarative, expressive and commissive speech acts. Based on the finding, the researcher gets the results that the use of epistemic modality in representative speech act dominates the findings. The domination of the use of modality in representative speech act indicates that Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono possesses of sufficient knowledge about culture as it becomes the theme of the forum. Based on the result of finding in this thesis, the researcher realizes that there are a lot of opportunities for other researchers who are interested about modality to analyze it in other media such as in television program, music and others.
