Abstract

This study is intended to reveal the students’ reading ability through SQ4R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Reflect and Review) method. This paper is written to achieve the objectives: 1) to find out the implementation of the SQ4R method for teaching reading News Item, 2) to find out students’ perception on the implementation of the SQ4R method for teaching reading News Item. This study employed qualitative research as the research methodology. The data was collected through participants questioning and by doing observation during research. The SQ4R method was implemented in Islamic Senior High School of YASIPA Ujung Berung on the second grade and 8 participants from 25 students were chosen to be asked for their perceptions of the SQ4R method. The finding of this study shows that the implementation of the SQ4R method for teaching reading news item ran well, such as explain SQ4R method step-by-step, provided News Item text to facilitate students and explain News Item text material. Moreover, the data from students’ perception of the implementation SQ4R method shows a good response from students. They were facilitated to understand and obtain new information from a text, especially English text. Besides, they were also able to raise new vocabulary. In summary, the finding shows that the implementation of SQ4R method for teaching reading was ran well and this method gave good effect in students reading comprehension.
