Abstract

Representative is one classification in speech act that state what the speaker believes to be case or not. According to Searly (1976) “Representative is the type of utterance that commits the speaker to the truth of the expressed proposition.” The researcher analyzes about representative speech act in Donald Trump’s inauguration speech. The research questions of this research are what kinds of representative illocutionary act in Donald Trump’s inauguration speech and what are the functions of representative speech act in Donald Trump’s inauguration speech. This research uses the theory of Yule (1996:54) in classifying kinds of representative speech acts. The theory of Searly (1979) is used to analyzed the function of representative speech acts. The researcher takes the data from Donald Trump’s inauguration speech that has been published in January 20, 2017 in the white house. This research uses qualitative research. Dornyei (2007:25) argues “Qualitative research involves data collection procedures that result primarily in open-minded, non-numerical data which are then analyzed primarily by non-statistical method.” The researcher analyses the data by some steps: marking, classifying, interpreting, and analyzing. The result of this research shows that there are 37 data kinds of representative speech act: Assertion (16 data), statement of fact (8 data), description (5 data), stating (4 data), and concluding (4 data). Meanwhile, the functions of representative speech act are 13 data: stating (4 data), reporting (2 data), concluding (4 data), suggesting (2 data), and complaining (1 datum). The researcher suggests to next researchers who want to do the same research, it is suggested to broaden the scope of study with a deeper analysis to find new identification of the theory and it is also expected to analyze with different object, such as muslim figure, advertisement, social media, comic and magazine.
