Abstract

Textbook is needed to guide the teaching-learning process in the class. It plays an important role because textbook is used to convey the teaching materials to students and to facilitate the teaching-learning process. A textbook has strength and weakness, but a good textbook is the one that can be understood by the readers or the students. Thus, the complexity of the language in the textbook should not be both too easy and too hard. There is a way to figure out the complexity or the difficulty of a textbook that can be done by the teacher before conveying the material to the students. The way to figure it out is analyzing the lexical density of the reading texts in the textbook. Lexical density is complexity of the language that is used in text analysis. Analyzing lexical density of a textbook is used to help the teacher conveys the material in classroom. Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas XI that had been arranged by the government was analyzed because the textbook is suitable with curriculum 2013 and used nationwide. The purposes of this study are: (1) to know the percentage of lexical density and the quality of the textbook based on its lexical density, (2) to know the teacher‟s evaluation about the textbook and compare it with the percentage of lexical density. This study used qualitative method due to the study focuses on one variable, the content of the textbook, specifically the lexical density. The techniques of collecting data are document analysis and interview. Document analysis was used to analyze the lexical density of the textbook, and the interview was used to know the evaluation of the textbook from the teacher who uses it in teaching-learning process. The result of analyzing the lexical density in the textbook shows that the complexity of the language in the text is more than 40%. There are five reading texts in the textbook and every reading texts has different lexical density: 46.03%, 49.16%, 49.13%, 54.35%, and 51.06% is. This percentage means that the level of difficulty of the textbook is not too easy or too difficult for the non-native reader (Indonesian) due to the percentage of lexical density of the textbook is 50%. The teacher who uses the textbook admitted that the textbook can be understood by the students quite easily but sometimes hard. From the interview, the teacher evaluated that the textbook is quite easy because sometimes the students understood the content and sometimes they did not. Based on the result of both document analysis and interview show that the complexity of the textbook is in the middle lever or quite. It is not too easy and also not too hard to be understood.
