Abstract

The novel is one of the literary works that approach the description of reality that occurs in social conflicts. This study analyses the social conflicts in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol novel and the relationship of the main characters with the social conflicts that occurred in England in the 18th century that were applied to the A Christmas Carol novel. Therefore, in this study, there are two formulations of problems related to social conflict. 1). How are the characterization of the main character as an upper class in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol Novel. 2). How social conflict does occurs in the main character as an upper class in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol Novel. The researcher applies the sociology of literature as a reflection and is supported by social conflict theory in the literary works of Lewis A Coser. The qualitative analysis method is a method used by researchers to find research results. Data collected in this study were obtained from the novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and showed the social conflict that occurred in England in the 18th century as a social conflict from the novel A Christmas Carol. The results of this study indicate in the A Christmas Carol novel there are social conflicts such as personality on the main character, social relations of the main characters, social class of the main characters. Researchers found social conflicts contained in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol novel such as the emergence of conflict between individuals and individuals, individuals and groups, groups and groups, poverty and hunger. Social conflicts that occur in the main character as a bad impact during the British industrial revolution in the 18th century are depicted in the novel A Christmas Carol, so that social conflict is the main idea in the creation of literary works.
