Abstract

This research is aimed at identifying the types and the functions of prepositional phrases in Cosmopolitan’s beauty article online. Some theoritical frameworks from Wishon and Burks (1980) are used in this research to classify the types of prepositional phrase. In addition, the theory from Frank (1972) is also used as supporting base. The data sources are taken from Cosmopolitan’s beauty article online magazine from January to June 2019. In this research, the data are selected and collected through highlighting the prepositional phrases in the beauty articles. The design of this research is qualitative method, in which the corpus are presented qualitatively in form of categorization based on types and functions and supported by descriptive explanations. The results show that 10 out of 11 types are related to the theory, those types are: prepositional phrase of place, identification, time, purpose, possession, manner, agent, material, quantity, direction. The uncategorized types found out of Wishon and Burks’s theory in this research are types of prepositional phrase of recipient, source, accompanient. Meanwhile, the functions of prepositional phrase found are as an adjectival funtions (48 data) and adverbial functions (24 data).
