Abstract

This research discusses interference. The writer discussed first language interference in English writing at the second semester students at English Department. It is one of bilingualism aspects that occur when someone is learning his/her English. In this case, the interference of Indonesian into English. It is chosen because the students sometimes use their Indonesian that often contains error when they are writing in English. The purposes of the study are to find out the interference in adjective orders performed and the causes of interferences by students. The writer used qualitative approach. Data were collected from questionnaire, interview and documentation. The writer selected some sentences included interference by using some theories of interference and analyzed them. As a result of the research, the writer found that most of students do the interference in using structure incorrectly, wrong word choice, used back to the first language strcuture or L1 transfer and the most interference is in grammatical. The causes of interference is caused of many students are bilingual people, diloyalty to targt language, limited vocabularies, and language contact. So, the writer concluded that interference occurs in this research more in grammatical and lexical interference. It shows that there are many errors due to language interference that influence bilingual people. In other words, their sentences are interfered by their first language, namely Indonesian and those caused by the students who did not master English well.
