Abstract

This research analyzes noun phrases in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s text of speech. Specifically, this research discusses the construction of noun phrases and the functions of noun phrases in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s text of speech. Focusing on the problem statements, there are two cases in this research. The first is what are the constructions of noun phrases in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s text of speech. The second is what are the functions of noun phrases in that text. In analyzing the construction of noun phrases, the researcher uses the theory of syntax by Thomas. In this theory, the noun phrase constructed by three types of modifier, those are pre-modifier, post-modifier, pre-modifier and postmodifier. Meanwhile, in analyzing the functions of noun phrases, the researcher uses the theory from Nelson. There are six functions of noun phrases, those are the noun phrase as subject, the noun phrase as subject complement, the noun phrase as direct object, the noun phrase as object complement, the noun phrase as indirect object and the noun phrase as adjunct. The result shows that three types of modifiers in noun phrase construction, they are pre-modifier (10), post-modifier (8), both of pre-modifier and postmodifier (12). Besides, there are five function of noun phrase in Yudhoyono’s text of speech, they are noun phrase as subject (3), noun phrase as subject complement (3), noun phrase as direct object (9), noun phrase as object complement (2), noun phrase as indirect object (3). Actually, there is one function again of noun phrase, that is noun phrase as adjunct but the researcher does not find the function of noun phrase as adjunct in Yudhoyono’s text of speech.
