Abstract

Comic strips are a series box of images that contains a story. This media can help students learn writing easily. They can build the story based on the pictures that are provided. The pictures can encourage and motivate students in learning writing. The purposes of the study are: 1) to find out students’ ability in writing narrative text by using comic strips as learning media; 2) to find out students’ ability in writing narrative text by conventional teaching (free-writing); 3) To find out the significant differences between the use of comic strips as learning media and teaching free-writing in writing narrative texts. This research uses quantitative method with a quasi-experimental form. This research takes two classes as the sample by using nonprobability sampling from the tenth grade of SMK IPTEK Cilamaya, Karawang. They are divided into experimental class (teaching writing by using comic strips) and control class (teaching writing by using conventional teaching ). The data is collected by using tests: pretest and posttest. The result of this research shows that students who are taught using comic strips in learning narrative texts gets higher score than those who are not. It can be seen from their mean scores of posttest. The mean score of posttest from students who are taught using comic strips is 75.05 and the mean score of posttest from student who are taught using conventional teaching is 68.41. After the calculation using statistic, there is a significant difference between those classes. Based on the calculation, ttable on significance 5% with df = 42 is 2.02, while tcount is 3.05. It means that tcount is (3.05) > ttable (2.02). It can be concluded that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. In other word, the use of comic strip can improve students’ writing skill in learning narrative texts. It is effective to be used in learning narrative texts.
