Abstract

Vocabulary is one important aspect in learning English subject. It is needed for students in order to provide more variety of teaching English vocabulary. In teaching vocabulary, English teacher should use variety media in teaching process in order to make the students not bored; the use of media is to attract students’ interest. Beside media, the way teacher gives the material is also important. Hyponymy is seen to be an alternative way of teaching vocabulary. Then, appropriate medias in teaching vocabulary is picture. Picture can create students attention so they can focus on learning English more. Picture is used to motivate students’ active participation, students’ interest, students’ enjoyment in English learning. Teaching hyponymy using picture seem to be an effective learning in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. This research using quantitative method which use statistical models as methodology of data analysis. The method in collecting data analysis for this research will be Pre-Experimental One Group Pre- test and Post- test Design. The students at ninth grade of MTs K.H. Wahab Muhsin Tasikmalaya is chosen to be applied the Pre- test and Post- test for data collection during the research process. There are 30 students at IX- 1 which is chosen to do this research. The result of analysis in the research showed that teaching hyponymy using picture adequate success. Hyponymy picture is effective, it can be seen from the result which showed the significance improvement after using hyponymy picture. The result before the treatment for lower score is 40 and the highest is score is 90 with 66 as average. While after the treatment the lower score is 60 and the highest is 93 with the average 75. Teaching hyponymy using picture can be used as an alternative in teaching vocabulary based on gained Post- test students’ achievement at the ninth grade of MTs K. H. Wahab Muhsin Tasikmalaya. Therefore, this media is recommended for teacher to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
