Abstract

Language is a tool for people to interact each other to express their thoughts, ideas, feelings, and emotions. The way people expressing their feeling is different. Some people express it with direct expression and some people do not. One expression to show emotion is lyrics. Hence, the object of this research is song lyrics from Adele’s 21 Album. Theoretical basis used in classifying types of metaphor is the theory proposed by Larson (1984). Larson metaphor devides types into teo parts, namely dead metaphor and live metaphor. While the theoretical basis used to analyze the meaning of the metaphor is the theory proposed by Griffiths (2006). Griffiths split into three, namely understanding the meaning of the sender’s meaning, sentence meaning and utterance meaning. This research concentrates on metaphor and the meaning used to express broken heart theme. The problem analyzed in this research concerns in metaphors and meaning. The researcher applies qualitative descriptive method in doing this research. The researcher found that most of metaphor used by Adele is live metaphor such as turning table, treasure gold, dirty water and so on. Furthermore, after the researcher interpreted the meaning, she found that most of them are utterance meaning. Besides, she found that the most dominant theme appears in 21 Album is theme of broken heart. In conclusion, Adele expresses broken heart theme through metaphor and connotation by exploring her feeling like feeling of anger, disappointment, sorrow, useless conviction, lost expectation and so on.
