Abstract

Naming is a word, expression, or use of a particular language that is decided principally in every informal speech and concepts, including the naming of characters in a movie script, especially in the use of specific words for a person's name and personality. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to conduct research relating to the naming and associative meanings with the following problem formulation: 1. How are the naming of characters in a movie script? 2. What are the associative meanings of the character's name in a movie script? The research method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method, using a semantic approach, with the naming theory from (Chaer 2014, p. 44) and (Sudaryat 2008, p. 59) and the associative meaning theory from Leech (1972, p. 23). This research uses the technique of collecting data that uses five steps. Includes reading, watching, identifying, writing, and classifying. From the data analysis, 35 data of naming consist into mention of sound imitation (1 datum), mention of characteristic (5 data), mention of place invention (5 data), mention of similarity (2 data), mention of eponyms (1 datum), mention of ingredient (1 datum), mention of the acronym (4 data), mention of neologism (1 datum) and mention of terminology (15 data). Furthermore, the associative meanings found in the name of characters are containing as (26) data. The data is divided into the connotative meaning with (10 data), the stylistic meaning (5 data), affective meaning (6 data), reflective meaning (3 data), and collocative meaning (2 data). Based on the findings of data analysis, the research results can be concluded that the terminology naming process dominates the naming using as found because the film is an adaptation of the fiction book and the name of the characters are contained mostly using the terminology and the associative meaning contained in the character names are dominated by connotative meaning.
