Abstract

Conflict often occurs in community life, it is due to the unsatisfactory choice in a life, of the course it is very interesting to be discussed in a literature work, because literature work will never be separated from community life. Therefore, Conflict always presents in every form of literature work one of them in the novel. Meanwhile, in this thesis, the researcher raises two problems, 1. How are the characterizations of the main character in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, 2. How does social conflict occurs in the main character Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. Based on the translation of the above, the researcher displays general concept of novel, general concept of character, general concept of conflict and kinds of conflict such as internal and external conflicts. In the design of this research, the researcher used a qualitative research method, which focuses on the description and interpretation, which is applied to describe the social conflict, causes and consequences of social conflict and the affects the main character. And then this technique of collecting data in the form of the study of documentation. Analysis of the data examined, the researcher will know about the characterizations of the main character, and social conflict on the main character in the form of external conflict and internal conflict. Internal conflict occurred on the main character, is the main character in against his conscience and trying to decide what to do against conscience, it indicates that the main character had to build moral in him, to encourage him in a trust its. Conflict External happened to struggle main character with character others, As reflected in the main character Pip with character others (Pip and Joe where they have to accept the distance grows between their relationship) Pip with society (Pip need to tear yourself away of trust to community such as social class standings are so important in changing his behavior on surrounding communities).
