Abstract

In communicating with other, people will produce some utterances that are not just saying something but is actually doing something. Such utterances which perform act will produce speech act and illocutionary act. Illocutionary act can be found in the dialogue movie. While movie is movement of pictures that has purpose to entertain the people through the story tells. The writer is interested in investigating utterances in Maleficent movie. This research focuses on two main problems: (1) What types of illocutionary act are in Maleficent movie by Robert Stromberg? (2) What are the functions of illocutionary act in Maleficent movie by Robert Stromberg? To find out the type of illocutionary act, the writer used theory from Searle’s (1979). Meanwhile to analyze function of illocutionary act, the writer used the theory Leech (1991). In addition, the writer conducts this research by using qualitative approach, thus writer used descriptive method in this research. This research has thirty five data from utterances taken from Maleficent movie. The findings show that there are five types of illocutionary acts found in this study, namely: Representatives which have 15 data, Directives which have 8 data, Commissives which have 6 data, Expressives which have 5 data and Declaratives which has 1 data. This study also found four function of illocutionary acts such as collaborative which have 15 data, competitive which have 8 data, convivial which have 6 data, and conflictive which have 5 data. Based on the result, it is clear that the dominant type in Maleficent movie is Representative and the dominant function is Collaborative. Therefore, the use of illocutionary act in Maleficent movie gives a clear description of types and function of illocutionary act in every utterances in Maleficent movie. However, still there must need development from linguistics students in analyzing the phenomenon of it. Hopefully, this research becomes a trigger for the student to conduct more valuable research in research on illocutionary act in other issues.
