Abstract

Everyone has different expression to declare his/her feeling and respond to the other’s utterances, in particularly declaration of love. Contributively, the social construction about gender causes different strategies in language used done by male and female. In addition, the context of situation and the relation between the speaker and the hearer have an influence on the selection of strategies used in communication. In regard to this issue, the writer proposed the problems as: 1) What strategies are used by male and female in both giving and responding declaration of love? 2) What are similarities and differences between male and female strategies in giving and responding declaration of love? The design of this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data were selected randomly from the part of movies scene and the part of TV drama series scene taken from YouTube. The data consist of the utterances of characters, the written texts which are arisen by the characters, the gestures of the characters, and facial expressions of the characters which show GRDL. The data were classified into appropriate strategy based on Brown’s and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies and Culpeper’s theory of impoliteness strategies. The result of this research showed that there are five strategies used by male and female in GDL. Bald on record and positive politeness are the most used strategies. These five strategies are balanced or equal in quantity used by both of male and female. In the other side, there are seven strategies found in RDL. The most strategies used by male are negative politeness and not to do FTA at all, while the most strategy used by female is not to do FTA at all. In addition, the similarities in strategies between male and female are the use of verbal communication in GDL and the use of politeness strategy more than impoliteness strategy in GRDL. In contrary, the differences in strategies between male and female are female use powerless style in GDL and use nonverbal communication in RDL more than male.
