Abstract

Symbol is a sign which refers to the object is denoted by virtue or a law, usually an association of general ideas, which operates to cause the symbol to be interpreted as referring to that object. Sign or symbol considerable variation among leading semiotics as to what semiotics involves. The research was focused on two main problems: 1) What are Lilliputians symbolized for, in Jonathan Swift’s novel Gulliver’s Travels 2) How the interpretations of Lilliputians symbolized in Jonthan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels that is related with Frye’s theory of symbol. The purpose of this research is answering the question of the statement of problems. In this analysis, the researcher uses qualitative analysis method. The descriptive research involves a collect of techniques used to specify, delineate, or describe naturally occurring phenomenon without experimental manipulation. The data of this research is taken from the novel, entitle Gulliver’s Travels. The grand theory of the research is Northrop Frye’s symbol theory. The result of the research is to analyze symbols in novel. Especially symbol of Lilliput are showed from the characters in the novel. The first is described about characters that are symbolized of Lilliput, the aims of Lilliput itself is represent as person who is oppression. The second is the meaning of Lilliput symbols, it is described of the conflict in the novel including; social issue, quarrel, and oppression. The last is relation between characters and theory of symbol. At the end of the research conclusion and suggestion are explained based on the discussion of the research. The researcher suggests the further research can more elaborate and specific in discussing of symbol in the research.
