Abstract
The research was focused on analysing English language variation used by Indonesian teenagers in Instagram. In this modern era, teenager society in Indonesia is dominated by western culture, one of them is teen language. The using of teen language sometimes cannot be understood by adult or others. Then is always shown by teenagers in social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and many more. This language is categorized as language variations. Language variations is part of sociolinguistics field which describing and understanding variation in patterns of speech. Instagram as social media represents a language variation that happen in teenagers. This research was further conducted with following problems: 1. How the use english variation by Indonesian teenagers in Instagram? 2. What factors that causes the different use language variations by Indonesian teenagers? Language variation is part of sociolinguistics field which describing and understanding variation in patterns of speech. Part of the language variation is idiolect, dialect, cronolect. To understand the language variation people should study in sociolinguistics. Sociolinguistics is the study of how people use language in their everyday life. This research was conducted by using qulitative descriptive method. The source data in this research is Instagram. In analyzing data, the researcher uses several steps; determined one social media account, chooses Instagram, reading the postings Indonesian teenagers and make a noteto be used analyzed, and then selecting the data that used the language variations by Chaer and Agustina theory, identfying the language variation. And the last is interpreting the data made an explanation as well as interpretation about the data in order get the result, the are: how the use English language variation by Indonesian teenagers in Instagram and what factors that causes the different use of language variation by Indonesian teenagers. The data analyses showed some findings and discussion based formulated research problems. The use of language variations in Instagram often used by Indonesian teenagers language variation appear in Instagram is the language variation of sociolect and the factors that affect the language variation in Instagram is age. Based on the finding and discussion above the reseacher suggests that the readers have to pay more attention in understanding language variation in Instagram. Language variation used by Indonesian teenagers it also influenced by four major supporting factor that are based on age, sex, education, and socioeconomic levels. Then, reffering to these four major factors that accur the language variation on the writer only two major factors important are age and sex. Therefore, both of them are fundamental in society and vocabulary become important thing that cause language variation.
