Abstract

Many people around the world listen to the music, included in Indonesia. People listen to the music in every time. Sometimes, Indonesian people not understand the lyrics and the terms in the music. Many terms in the lyric have gotten from the other language such as from English language. This paper takes one band from Indonesia as an example that has many terms in the lyric. This paper also analyzes the meaning of the terms from song lyrics. This paper aims to describe the English loanword in Indonesian popular song specifically in Slank’s song lyrics. The important purpose of this research is to know the change of meanings of the loanwords from English into Indonesia in Song Lyrics. The problem is what types of semantic change of English loanwords in Indonesian popular songs. The research uses descriptive qualitative methods and analyzes the meaning of English loanwords. English loanword in Indonesia language that has extension meaning, narrowing meaning, and the same meanings or have no change of meaning. This research also explains the types of words as loanword and loan blend. To support this analysis, the writer uses some dictionaries, Merriam-Webster, Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia fifth edition. The writer uses some theories of semantic change and borrowing and uses qualitative descriptive method. Finally, the writer finds thirty-six terms from the songs. The loanwords from English in Indonesian popular song have the change of meaning namely extension meaning, narrowing meaning, and same meaning and the most of them are loan blend. There are 5,5 % words which have extension meaning, 5,5 % words which have narrowing meaning and 89 % of them which have the same meaning or have no change of meaning and the kind of the words there are only 8,3 % of loanword, 91,7 % of loan blend. On the other, the change of meanings in this research does not have regeneration and degeneration. The kind of the word the writer does not finds the loan shift. In addition the change of meaning does not have regeneration and degeneration as a part of semantic change. The kind of the word the writer not finds the loan shift. English borrowing words in Indonesian popular song there are many words which get the change of meaning as mention above.
