Abstract

Racism is one of the serious problems in every social life. One of literary works which discusses racism is The Help, which portrays racism as the manifestation of discrimination. This paper examines the theme of racial discrimination in Tate Taylor‘s The Help movie to discover the layers of meaning or interpretation of racial discrimination. In order to identify the interpretations of racial discrimination in Tate Taylor‘s The Help movie, there are two main problems in this research; the first one is racial discriminations presented in The Help movie and the second one is the impact of racial discrimination toward the black people described in The Help movie. Thus, structural approach is applied in this research. The writer also applied theory of discrimination by Lusgarten and the impact of racism by Rosenblatt to furnish this research. The research method is descriptive which is conducted with descriptive qualitative analysis. The data include in this research method is some quotations and screenshots of The Help movie regarding racial discrimination which implied within the text and pictures. The result of this research shows that racial discrimination in The Help movie divided in two components. The first component based on the concept of racial discrimination; direct discrimination and indirect discrimination. Direct discrimination happens when a person or a group of people is treated less favorably than another person or group because of their background or certain personal characteristics. Indirect discrimination is often less obvious in cases. The second component based on two types of racism; individual racism and institutional racism. In The Help movie, racial discrimination‘s evoke several negative impacts of black people, such as mental health; feeling oppressed, feeling anxious, and the defense of black people. All of those components are represented by the main characters; Aibileen, Skeeter, Minny, and Hilly. The conclusion of the research is racial discrimination give negative impacts, well on the directly or indirectly. The impact of racial discrimination in The Help movie happen because the existence of the difference racial group in social life between black people and white people.
