Abstract

This paper is aimed to describe the usage of vague expression Oprah Winfrey show. It analysed the common types of vague expression used by the guests as well as the reason of its use in Oprah Winfrey Show: Michael Jackson talks to Oprah Winfrey as well as J.K. Rowling talks to Oprah Winfrey. The researcher was interested in this topic because in a conversation people usually say random words which do not specifically refer to, according to Channell this is called as vague language. The research problems of this research are what are the common types of vague expressions use by Michael Jackson and J.K. Rowling and for what reason the vague expressions are used based on Michael Jackson and J.K. Rowling’s utterences in Oprah Winfrey Show. The researcher focus on the transcript of both conversations by applied descriptive qualitative method. The result showed that man used vague expressions more often than woman did, it was as found that Michael Jackson used 51 words which was identified as vague expressions in his utterances with the highest used are the expressions that introduce fuzziness. Meanwhile, 36 data was found in J.K. Rowling’s utterances with hedge as the most vague expressions used. The vague expressions in both conversation was used to violate maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. It taken place because both Michael Jackson and J.K. Rowling broke the rules of conversation based on Grice’s cooperative principle.
