Abstract

This study discusses the azan pitu ritual as one of the efforts of the people of Cirebon in preventing the spread of the Covid-19 virus outbreak. The study was conducted by analyzing a number of writings published in online media, online newspapers, television news, and books. This type of non-hypothetical qualitative research uses four stages of the historical method, namely: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the study show, firstly: historically the rituals of the azan pitu in Cirebon have been performed since the time of Wali Songo (Sunan Gunung Djati). At that time, the azan pitu ritual was carried out to repel the plague that was intentionally spread by enemies of the country who felt jealous of the success of Cirebon. Second, the implementation of the azan pitu ritual as a rebellion (magic repellent, witchcraft, plague) is preserved in Cirebon, namely at the Great Mosque of Cipta Cipta. Third, the people of Cirebon are now holding azan pitu ritual in the midst of the outbreak of the covid-19 virus, certainly as one of the efforts to ward off the plague.
