Abstract
Listening is the first skill to learn because people will listen first and try to understand what the meaning of the word is, before they are really able to pronounce it. Thus, teacher must find more engaging activities during listening lesson. One of them is through digital storytelling. Therefore, this research is to investigate students’ activities during the implementation of digital storytelling to engage students with listening skills. This research used qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants of this research consisted of an English teacher and 9 students chosen due to their related scores and the accessibility. A purposive sampling technique used in the research. It took one class based on the teacher suggestion. In collecting the data, this study used two techniques which are observation and interview with open-ended questions. The results of this study show several points based on the observation and interview. First, the teacher used the Three Phase Technique to incorporate digital storytelling into the teaching learning process. Second, the majority of students agreed that digital storytelling offers a lot of advantages in learning English, especially in strengthening listening skills, based on their responses in listening activities utilizing digital storytelling. In conclusion, teachers must be more innovative in their instruction to students in order that she/he can stimulate students’ interest in learning English. To give appropriate instruction, teachers must pay attention to the level of ability of her/his students. For future researchers, it is expected to develop a new method of teaching English that incorporates digital storytelling so that it should boost students' interest and proficiency in the language.
