Abstract

Abstract Freedom Writers is a movie under distribution of Paramount Pictures in 2007. It was directed by Richard LaGravenese and produced by Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher with length 02:02:57. This movie tells a story about racial discrimination occurred in 90th century in America. A chaos between the famous Rodney King against one colored man and four white policemen provoked a race tension in America. It impacts negatively towards American society, including the adolescent. Class 203 in Wilson’s High school located in Long Beach is one of the places where school kids undertake racist behavior towards dissimilar ethnic race. Gruwell is aware of racist behavior among his students, therefore he tried to overcome this situation with every possible solution. This research aims to find illustration of racial discriminations, discover factors that evoke racial discrimination and to uncover solutions that Erin Gruwell did to overcome racial discrimination in Freedom Writers movie. To investigate this research problem, researcher employed post-colonial theory with mimetic approach from Abrams to unwrap discrimination race issue that happens in the movie. This research applied qualitative method. This method was engaged to figure out racial discrimination in Freedom Writers movie through its movie script. On the other hand, to analyze data this research used post-colonial theory to come up with answer for the stated research questions. The result of this study shows that racial discrimination illustrated as a chaos, brutal and full of bullies. Racial discrimination is generally happened among adolescents with various types. It can be mocking other ethnics, quip body shape even until physical violence. One of the reasons to this discrimination is Rodney King chaos. Meanwhile, Erin Gruwell effort to stop this discrimination is through literature as learning method such as reading books that relates a lot between student discrimination behaviors and the characters in the novel. Not just reading books but also creating films and inviting a speaker as a presenter, making a trip to various places and writing as a method to convey their daily life problem in a diary. Abstrak Freedom Writers adalah sebuah film yang diterbitkan oleh Paramount Pictures pada tahun 2007. Film ini disutradarai oleh Richard LaGravenese dan diproduksi oleh Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg dan Stacey sher dengan durasi 02:02:57. Film ini menceritakan tentang diskriminasi ras yang terjadi pada tahun 90-an di Amerika. Kericuhan Rodney King yang terkenal antara satu orang kulit hitam dan empat polisi kulit putih menimbulkan ketegangan ras di Amerika. Hal tersebut membawa dampak yang negatif kepada masyarakat, termasuk para remaja. Kelas 203 di Sekolah Menengah Atas Wilson yang berada di Long Beach adalah salah satu tempat dimana anak-anak sekolah menerapkan perilaku rasis terhadap kelompok etnis yang berbeda. Gruwell sebagai pengajar di kelas tersebut menyadari adanya rasisme diantara para muridnya, sehingga dia berusaha mengatasi hal tersebut dengan berbagai macam cara. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan gambaran diskriminasi ras, menemukan faktor-faktor terjadinya diskriminasi ras serta untuk menemukan solusi-solusi yang dilakukan oleh Erin Gruwell untuk mengatasi diskriminasi ras dalam film Freedom Writers. Untuk meneliti permasalahan tersebut, peneliti menggunakan teori poskolonial dengan pendekatan mimetik dari Abrams untuk membedah permasalahan diskriminasi ras yang ada di dalam film tersebut. Metode kualitatif adalah teori yang digunakan pada penelitian ini. Metode ini digunakan untuk mengetahui diskriminasi ras yang ada pada film Freedom Writers melalui movie script. Sedangkan, di dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan teori poskolonial untuk membedah permasalahan-permasalahan yang ada. Hasil dari penelitian ini, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa diskriminasi ras tergambarkan dengan kekacauan, brutal dan penuh dengan bulian. Diskriminasi ras tersebut secara umum terjadi di kalangan remaja dengan bentuk bermacam-macam. Mulai mengejek etnis lain, mengejek bentuk tubuh sampai kekerasan fisik. Salah satu penyebab diskriminasi disini adalah kerusuhan Rodney King. Sedangkan upaya yang dilakukan Erin Gruwell sebagai guru untuk meredam itu semua menggunakan sastra sebagai sarana pembelajaran seperti membaca buku-buku yang memiliki keterkaitan antara tokoh yang ada di novel dengan keadaan yang dialami oleh murid-muridnya, membuat sebuah film, mengundang seorang tokoh sebagai pembicara, mengadakan perjalanan ke berbagai tempat dan menulis sebagai sarana menyampaikan permasalahan mereka yang dituangkan ke dalam sebuah catatan harian.
