Abstract

This research discusses about English phrasal verb in the Jakarta Post online newspaper by syntactically form and its categories of phrasal verb. The writer uses articles of Jakarta Post online newspaper because it is one of mass media in Indonesia which use English language and founded phrasal verb in the articles which can be analyzed by using syntax. This research is aimed to investigate two main problems. They are: 1. How english phrasal verb formed syntaxtically in the Jakarta Post online newspaper? 2. What are the categories of phrasal verb are used in Jakarta Post online newspaper?This research employs descriptive qualitative method. The first one is theory of tree diagram propose by Linda Thomas (1993) to analyze the syntax elements and the second one is the theory of Brown (2002) about categories of phrasal verb to classify catgeories of phrasal verb in the Jakarta Post online newspaper. The writer found various pattern of phrasal verb which found in the Jakarta Post online newspaper. There are some English phrasal verb in sentences or phrase form. From 30 english phrsal verb in 20 articels of Jakarta Post online newpaper there are 16 english phrasal verb have pattern V+Preposition and 14 included to S2 (sub-clause). Meanwhile, they have some patterns of syntax of the data. There are 6 of S+VC, 10 of S+V+O+C, 8 of S+V+O, S+V+C+P, NP+V+C, S+V+NP+C, S+V+PP, and S+V+P+C.In the case of categories of phrasal verb , from 30 data, there are 7 of transitive-inseparable phrasal verb, 11 of transitive-inseparable phrasal verb and 12 of intransitive-inseparable phrasal verb. Finally, it can be concluded that english phrasal verb in the Jakarta Post online newspaper have some form of syntax and the category used more in Jakarta post online newspaper is intransitive-inseparable phrasal verb than other category.
