Abstract
ENGLISH: This undergraduate thesis discusses the irony found in five (5) speeches found in the book Collected Documents of the Asian-African Conference. The Five Speeches were delivered by leaders from various countries at the Asia-Africa Conference in 1955. At the beginning of the study, the author raised several arguments related to the values and meanings contained in the speech and discussed their relationship with irony and ambivalence. The writer formulated two research questions in this research. The first question is how irony is illustrated or depicted through five speeches given by delegates at the Asian and African conferences in 1955. The second question was about how ambivalence illustrates the irony of easterners. In this undergraduate thesis the author used several theories put forward by Cleanth Brooks (1971) and Homi K. Bhabha (1984). The methodology of this research was descriptive qualitative. There were four types of irony, namely the concept of metaphor, the concept of context, the concept of organic relationship and the concept of irony. Then the researchers analyzed the ambivalence of the five (5) speeches used the ambivalence theory from Homi K. Bhabha to find out how ironic the easterners are. From the results of this study it can be concluded that irony and ambivalence can identify the value and meaning of a speech. As a result the irony in the speech can convey the opposite meaning to the audience. Irony and ambivalence can provide a thorough understanding of all information. Ada empat jenis ironi yaitu concept of metaphor, concept of context, concept of organic relationship dan concept of irony.
