Abstract
The purposes of this research are 1) to know students’ reading comprehension ability taught by using STAD, 2) to know students’ reading comprehension ability taught by using skimming and scanning technique, 3) to find out how significant is the use of STAD to improve students’ reading comprehension. This research used experimental method. The population of this research is students at the second grade of SMPN 1 Palabuhanratu, Sukabumi. Total population 285 students. The populations used as sample of this research are two classes of VIII B and VIII C. The population was divided into two classes, experimental class taught by using STAD and control class taught by using skimming and scanning technique. Data were collected by using written test; pre-test and post-test. The purpose of the test is to know the effectiveness of STAD to improve students’ reading comprehension ability. The research findings can be seen from mean of both experimental class and control class. The mean of pre-test in experimental class before being given the treatments is 58.4 and after being given the treatments is 74.0. The mean of pre-test in control class is 65.6 and mean of post-test is 66.1. Based on findings above, it is known that the result of experimental class is better than control class. From the calculation it is known that tcount is 3.82 > ttable is 1.68. It means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. So, Ha accepted if tcount > ttable: it means that there is a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension ability using STAD. From the result research, it can be concluded that the STAD (Student Teams Achievement Division) can improve students’ reading comprehension ability of the second grade in SMPN 1 Palabuhanratu.
