Abstract

Irony is a figure of speech which is pretty much choose as a puller on a literary work. Many dictionary agree that definition of Irony is a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words. Theme itself is the subject in a story, the main idea of the story; the author wishes to convey through the story. There are two research question in this research (1) Types of Irony found in Frankenstein (2) Irony Develop Theme in Frankenstein. This research use the theory of irony from Abrams (1999), to analyze the types of Irony found in Frankenstein, and the theory of theme from DiYanni (1986) to analyze about irony develop theme in Frankenstein. This research used structuralism method and the primary data is Frankenstein novel. This research found three types of irony from the data, they are verbal irony, the situational irony and dramatic irony, and irony develop theme in Frankenstein such this way verbal irony has been used a words to describe an event, dramatic irony has been used the reader knowledge (in this case the researcher is a reader)/ play/character/situation to describe an event, situational irony has been used to describe an event caused by discontentment and hatred because what is expected has different with what actually happen.
