Abstract

In a literary work containing very rich psychological aspects, human understanding in literature will be complete if supported by psychology, and vice versa. This thesis discusses the inner conflict of Robinson Crusoe's character in Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe novel through the approach of literary psychology. This approach is one of the approaches in literature that examines the mentality of characters. In this study, researchers made an analysis of Robinson Crusoe's novel by using a literary psychology approach specifically Sigmund Freud's theory of Id, Ego, Superego, Anxiety and Self Defense Methods. The objectives of this study are: (1) Knowing the form of inner conflict experienced by the main character includes the conflict between choices that are not in accordance with the wishes, confusion in dealing with problems, and expectations not in accordance with reality. (2) Knowing some of the factors behind the inner conflict and the factors that play an important role in several conflict disorders such as: Aggression Factors, Loss Factors, Personality Factors, Cognitive Factors and Powerless Factors. (3) And the last is to know the form of inner conflict resolution. An inner conflict can be resolved through several stages of resolution or also called a form of conflict resolution. Form of conflict resolution or also called ego defense mechanism is a process or way when individuals experience excessive anxiety pressures, such as: Sublimation, Repression, Projection, and Rationalization.
