Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the important aspects that should be obtained by the students’ to learn English as foreign language in Indonesia. Specifically, learning vocabularies still exist in many schools. Teachers usually use vocabulary list, definition, written and oral drills, and cards in teaching vocabulary. Studying vocabulary requires much effort. There are several possible ways to introduce the vocabulary of a foreign language to students. One of them is to use a worksheet (LKS) which is used by learners to learn. In it is also as tool of measuring students’ abilities in understanding vocabulary in English. The aims of this research is to know how good students vocabulary mastery at SMPN 1 Losarang, to know how good students worksheet at SMPN 1 Losarang, and to know how the correlation between students vocabulary mastery and students worksheet. This research applied a case study using correlation statistic. The subject of the research in this study is the students in seventh grade in SMPN 1 Losarang, Indramayu. The sample is taken from seventh grade, it has 36 students’ consisting of 13 male and 23 female. The data was got by using students score from vocabulary and students worksheet. Students vocabulary score was as variable X and students worksheet was as variable Y. Since both of them data is abnormal, the resulted from correlation statistic non-parametric (Spearmen Rank). The result of this research can be concluded as follows: (1) that students vocabulary mastery at first grade of SMPN 1 Losarang is 61.7. (2) For students worksheet at first grade of SMPN 1 Losarang is 66.17. (3) And correlation between the students vocabulary mastery and students worksheet is 0.26, it can be categorized in low correlation because the value is in interval 0.21 – 0.40. The study is shows that there are some reasons behind it. First the material is not suitable for first grade; there is no picture; and too much text. Therefore, it is strongly suggested for the teacher to have more creative in teaching material vocabulary; the teacher should be in detail when explaining the word from students’ worksheet; and the teachers have to choose students worksheet book materials as in fact the students worksheet book is for the third grade students. For the students, LKS is referable for improving the quality of learning not only in the classroom but also at their home; this it improves the quality of learning process well.
