Abstract
Reading is one of fourth basic skills in English subject, but many students do not like reading activity in their daily instructional, actually in the senior high school. Besides that, this skill must be controlled by the students, because many text that they must learn. Narrative text is the one of many texts that they must learn in the classroom. The purposes of this research are to answer some research questions, there are: (1) how is the students’ reading skill in the narrative text before using the lexias (units of reading)?; (2) How is the students’ reading skill in the narrative text after using the lexias (units of reading)?; And (3) How effective of using the lexias (units of reading) on reading skill in the narrative text. The method used in this research is quantitative method. The data got from the students’ test score collected by the researcher, there are the pre-test and post-test score. Whereas, the sample used are 30 students of eleventh grade of Madrasah Aliyah Darussalam Islamic boarding school Kasomalang-Subang. The highest score of the pre-test of the experimental class is 97 and the lowest score is 20, with the average score as much as 56. Meanwhile, the highest score for the post-test in the experimental class is 100 and the lowest score is 52 while the average of the post-test score is 74, 13. The result of analyzing the hypothesis shows t count (2, 51) > t table (2, 00). Therefore, the Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means, the final conclusion of the research of the effectiveness of using the lexias (units of reading) on improving the students’ reading skill in the narrative text in the Madrasah Aliyah (senior high school) Darussalam Islamic boarding school Subang shows that there is a significant influence. It means, using the lexias (units of reading) on improving the students’ reading skill in the narrative text is effective.
