Abstract
The focus of this thesis is the utilization adjunct devices and its indication in the social relationship between the speaker and the listeners in the opening speech of the Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs in “Dialogue on the Role of Women in Building and Sustaining Peace”. This thesis uses a qualitative method in examining adjunct and tenor as theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics. According to Halliday and Matthiessen (2014, p. 155) and Eggins (2004, p. 158), adjunct is the final element of residue containing some additional information in the clause that is realized by an adverbial group or a prepositional phrase. This research includes 6 mood, 5 polarity, 126 circumstantial, 1 comment, 14 vocative, and 39 conjunctive adjuncts. Besides, modal and vocative adjuncts can determine the indication of social relationship between the speaker and the listeners. As in this thesis that uses tenor theory, the status can be equalized, the contact can be familiarized, and the affective involvement can be changed according to the situation that the speaker wants to create.
