Abstract

This research focuses on the study of reception aesthetics of John M. Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians as the product of popular culture using the theory of Hans Robert Jauss’s Aesthetic of Reception. In this study the researcher presented several interrelated questions to obtain three main points related to the research topic. First, as a concern of reception aesthetics, which is the response from each respondent will produce a different perspective, the researcher categorized the responses to find out the possibilities and what aspects appear in the response. Second, as a "win favor" product, the researcher seeks to discovered what aspects of this film have succeeded in attracting the attention of respondents (as audience) to watch this film. And finally, as one of the media for learning, the researcher finds out what important messages can be taken by respondents from this film as learning for their real life. The research method used by the researcher in this study is the qualitative method. The instrument used to collect the data is questionnaire, and the source of the data is the responses from 23 respondents who participated in filling out the questionnaire. After the researcher derived all of the respondents’ responses, through the qualitative method, the researcher began to analyze it by categorizing the types of response, identifying the interesting aspects and the important messages of Crazy Rich Asians film based on respondents responses, and provide the justification and the explanation supported by the relevant theory. As the result, the researcher discovered that, the respondents showed that their responses categorized into eight types of response categories (based on Hancock’s concept), this case depending on how they understood the film (the reception aesthetic process). The eight types of response categories found are Understanding, Character Introspection, Questioning, Character Identification, Character Assessment, Story Involvement, Literary Evaluation and Reader Digression. Besides, their responses also lead the researcher to the statement that this film, had five interesting aspects of the film. They are plot, title of the film, characters, aspect of wealth, and the social condition in the story of this film. For the last, the respondents’ responses also lead the researcher to the point that Crazy Rich Asians film contained important messages (moral messages) that related to the self-awareness and self-correction. Keywords: Aesthetic, audience, interesting, message, pop culture, reception, respondent, responses.   Penelitian ini berfokus pada kajian estetika resepsi Crazy Rich Asians karya John M. Chu sebagai produk budaya populer menggunakan teori Estetika Penerimaan karya Hans Robert Jauss. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti mengajukan beberapa pertanyaan yang saling terkait sehingga diperoleh tiga poin utama yang berkaitan dengan topik penelitian. Pertama, sebagai perhatian terhadap estetika resepsi, yaitu respon dari masing-masing responden akan menghasilkan perspektif yang berbeda, maka peneliti mengkategorikan respon tersebut untuk mengetahui kemungkinan dan aspek apa yang muncul dalam respon tersebut. Kedua, sebagai produk “win favor”, peneliti berupaya untuk menemukan aspek apa saja dari film ini yang berhasil menarik perhatian responden (sebagai penonton) untuk menonton film ini. Dan terakhir, sebagai salah satu media pembelajaran, peneliti menemukan pesan penting apa saja yang dapat diambil oleh responden dari film ini sebagai pembelajaran dalam kehidupan nyata mereka. Metode penelitian yang digunakan peneliti dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah kuesioner, dan sumber datanya adalah tanggapan dari 23 orang responden yang berpartisipasi dalam pengisian kuesioner. Setelah peneliti mendapatkan semua tanggapan responden, melalui metode kualitatif peneliti mulai menganalisis dengan mengkategorikan jenis tanggapan, mengidentifikasi aspek-aspek yang menarik dan pesan-pesan penting dari film Crazy Rich Asians berdasarkan tanggapan responden, dan memberikan justifikasi. dan penjelasannya didukung oleh teori yang relevan. Hasilnya, peneliti menemukan bahwa, responden menunjukkan bahwa tanggapan mereka dikategorikan ke dalam delapan jenis kategori tanggapan (berdasarkan konsep Hancock), hal ini tergantung pada bagaimana mereka memahami film (proses estetika resepsi). Dan ke delapan tipe dari kategori respon tersebut diantaranya Understanding, Character Introspection, Questioning, Character Identification, Character Assessment, Story Involvement, Literary Evaluation dan Reader Digression. Selain itu, tanggapan mereka juga mengarahkan peneliti pada pernyataan bahwa film ini memiliki lima aspek yang menarik dari film tersebut. Yaitu plot, judul film, karakter, aspek kekayaan, dan kondisi sosial dalam cerita film ini. Terakhir, tanggapan responden juga mengarahkan peneliti pada poin bahwa film Crazy Rich Asians mengandung pesan-pesan penting (pesan moral) yang berkaitan dengan kesadaran diri dan koreksi diri.
