Abstract

Humans are essentially social beings, it affects humans who naturally will always have the urge to carry out social interactions with each other. In a pragmatics review, which is one of the branches of linguistics, one type of speech act that is very important in an effort to maintain harmony in social relations in society is the phatic speech act. This study discusses the types and function of phatic speech acts that are spoken by characters in 13 Reasons Why movie series. Furthermore, the description of the phatic as social dimension token is explained to find out the purpose of the characters in uttering the phatic speech act. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative procedure with collected all the data from 13 Reason Why movie series. The theory used in this research are pragmatics by Leech (1983), context by Cutting (2002), phatic speech act by Kreidler (1998), Acknowledgements by Ibrahim (1993), phatic function by Jumanto (2014) and phatic as social dimension token by Laver (1975). Based on the result of the data analysis there are 45 data that contain the rules of phatic speech act which is divided into: apologize, condolence, congratulation, greeting, thanking, wishes, and acceptance. Also the social dimension token is presented which is categorized into neutral token, self-oriented token and other-oriented token to explain the strategy of the speaker in the 13 Reasons Why movie series to convey the purpose of speaker’s utterances to the listener.
