Abstract
Horror is a genre that is liked by many people. The feelings of worry and fear are the main attraction of this genre. Foreshadowing and plot make the story more interesting to read, by providing hints of what's to come, dramatic suspense or suspense. Many horror stories focus on foreshadowing and plot, one of which is the novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. The plot and foreshadowing in this novel play a role in giving a more tense horror impression. Apart from that, another novel similar to Hill House is Danur's novel from Indonesia. This novel also features foreshadowing and plot to make horror stories interesting. Both of these novels have the same foreshadowing function that is having a role in creating dramatic impressions, suspensions, clues, and predictions, as well as in the plot. This research is a literary comparative study that takes foreshadowing and plot as research topics. This research specifically provides an explanation in the form of arguments and an overview of the role of foreshadowing and plot in the novels The Haunting of Hill House and Danur. It is proven that both of them have the same role in foreshadowing but are slightly different in the Plot section. In proving this, researchers used Carroll's (1990) theory about foreshadowing and Fahy's (2010) about horror plots. After finding and collecting 45 data from The Haunting of Hill House and 23 data from Danur, the researcher looked for similarities of foreshadowing and plot in both novels using a literary comparative method and found the conclusion that most of the foreshadowing roles in both novels were the same but the plot was different because these novels have different themes resulting in different subplots. Therefore, to prove it, the researcher collected data taken from both novels as the main data which was then analyzed according to the theory in this study.
