Abstract

Verb group Phrase (VgP) is a group which at least has a main verb and its tense and/or the helping verb. There are two types of helping verbs, they are modal auxiliary and primary auxiliary. Modal auxiliary (will, would, can, could, may, might, shall, should, must, ought to) states the possibility, necessity, and so on. Meanwhile, helping verbs which are not modal are called primary auxiliary, they are: have, be, and do. There are five types of Verb group Phrase (VgP): mono-transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, di-transitive verbs, intensive verbs, and complex-transitive verbs. The purposes of the research are to know the types of Verb group Phrases and to analyze the construction of Verb group Phrases in the sentences in “My Name Is Red”, a novel by Orhan Pamuk. The researcher uses Verb group Phrase theory by Linda Thomas and Irman Nurhapitudin as the references. The source of data which is used to analyze the Verb group Phrases (VgP) is the novel entitled "My Name Is Red" by Orhan Pamuk. The researcher takes a chapter entitled "I Am a Tree" to be the object of research. The data which is used is qualitative data and uses purposive technique in taking the sample of them. The researcher found the five types of Verb group Phrase in the novel "My Name Is Red" by Orhan Pamuk, especially in the chapter entitled "I Am a Tree". From the 80 sentences, there are 25 sentences which contain mono-transitive verbs, 15 sentences which contain intransitive verbs, 3 sentences with di-transitive verbs, 32 sentences with intensive verbs, and 5 sentences which contain complex-transitive verbs. In "I am a Tree" chapter, the most number of the type of Verb group Phrase is intensive verb. This is because, in this chapter, the point of view which is used is a tree. Just like a tree does, it does non-physical activities (intensive verb) and just watches around to other characters to be retold to the reader.
