Abstract
Reading is one of the primary skills that foreign language learners must master. In learning to read, the text learned by students should not only be from textbooks. Students need to be introduced to texts that expose the native language to prepare them for the real world. Therefore, the authentic text is the text that must be used by teachers in teaching reading subjects. This research is aimed: (1) to find out EFL students' challenges in comprehending authentic texts, (2) to reveal the strategies that EFL students use to comprehend authentic texts. This research used a qualitative approach with case study. This research was conducted to the third semester students of the English Education Department of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The data were collected through questionnares and interviews. The data analysis was presented by describing the result of students' challenges in comprehending authentic texts in online classroom and their strategies to comprehend it. The result of this research shows that there were three challenges that students faced in comprehending authentic texts with the highest scores including unfamiliar vocabulary with a percentage of 21.88%, lack of vocabulary 13.4%, and complex sentences 12.5%. Then, in understanding authentic texts, three strategies were frequently used by the students, namely repetitive reading used by 26.04% of participants, looking for unfamiliar words and understanding their meaning 16.67% of participants, and 16.67% of participants translate the whole text. Those strategies can help students in comprehending authentic texts. In conclusion, the students experienced several challenges in comprehending authentic texts, and they used several strategies to comprehend authentic texts. This study is recommended for those who want to know strategies that can be used to comprehend authentic texts.
