Abstract

This study analyzes the formula for the romance genre in the novel Me Before You. The formulation of the problem in this study is divided into two, namely (1) How is the plot construction in Jojo Moyes' novel Me before you? (2.) F What about the main character in Jojo Moyes' Me before you? This research is a study of popular literature, where this research is slightly different from other research. This is because the object in this study is a literary work that is included in the popular category. This study uses Cawelty's main theory to describe the formula for making romance stories. Cawelty's theory focuses on being able to assist researchers in categorizing that the objects in this study are indeed included in popular literature studies. In addition, this research does not only focus on using Cawelty's theory as the main theory, researchers use other supporting theories such as Radway and Abrams which help researchers to be able to study the characters in this study. So that this research can be able to carry out a fairly in-depth analysis in accordance with the usefulness of the theory that researchers have used in this study. This study uses the literary criticism method using an objective approach. One of the reasons why it uses an objective approach is because the researcher wants to examine the results in a balanced way. The results of this study found a new finding that the author of the novel Me Before You uses different techniques in writing his romance stories. Usually the writers of the romance genre have a formula that is the same as other writers, but in this study the depiction of the male character in this story is something different from other love stories. If previously in other love stories, usually the formula that will be used is that the male character has the character of a hero or has extraordinary power to save the life of a female character. However, in this story the situation is reversed, the male characters in this study are disabled after the tragedy of the collision. So it is certain that the male character is far from the word hero. However, at the end of the story the researcher can conclude that a person's strength in a love story is not only focused on the physical, but this strength is the generosity of the main character. This is certainly something new because in almost every romance story, the male character always has a strong physique and a strong heart. In contrast to this film character, all the male character has is the determination to be able to make the people he loves happy even though he has to suffer. This research provides something new for the development of romance stories, this can be ascertained because almost all romance story endings always end happily. It is true that the object in this study ended happily, but the ending of the story in this film ended happily not because of living together but ended by realizing the dreams of each of the two characters, because the male character in this study chose to die and leave the female character..
